I have examined the attached emailed digital photos of the instrument described below, but have not seen the instrument itself. Below is my estimate, based on these photos, of the instrument’s value; however, it is not possible to judge from photos alone the exact state of originality and need of repair, so my appraisal is only accurate insofar as the photos are representative of the actual condition of the instrument.
We certify that the guitar described below is, in our opinion, a Gibson model L-4 made in the year 1940.
Description: Serial number 96286. We have provided the following description: “Gibson L-4 Serial # 96286 Appears all original, good condition except hole in pickguard” Based upon examination of the photos, it is evident that the nitrocellulose tortoise shell grain pickguard is starting to deteriorate. Typically once this starts it will spread and the guard will need to be replaced. The deterioration unfortunately causes out gassing of nitric acid fumes which causes metal hardware in the vicinity to corrode and eventually will also damage the lacquer finish.
