1991 Fujigen produced Ibanez Voyager RBM-1, from the first year of production, based on the original Voyager played by Reb Beach. This one was born to shred, and there’s nothing that does it better, but it can sound mellow when it has to. The three humbuckers (two stacked) are hot and the Edge tremolo fitted with a tremsetter lets you divebomb all night without having to retune every five minutes. The neck is straight and fast with plenty of fret life. If you’ve already read the Harmony Central reviews of the RBM-1 you know that about the only issue with this model is that while it is perfect for metal/shred it lacks warmth. Although I doubt he was going for a Wes Montgomery sound, a previous owner addressed this to some degree with a with a push/pull active gain switch. Disengaged (pulled up) the tone is richer and fuller than what you’d expect from the Harmony Central reviews. Engaged you’re into overdrive.
A testament to the great sound and playability of this particular guitar is the level of road wear. The dings, dents and finish cracks are there, even if my camera could not capture them all well. The control knobs were moved farther away from the strings by the guy I bought it from so that they wouldn’t interfere with his aggressive playing style and he removed the coil tap mini-switch. He also moved the jack to the outside of the lower bout, which makes more sense than in the cutaway. The strap buttons have been replaced with a Dimarzio click lock strap. An Ibanez hard shell case, with one missing latch, is included.
