I wish I could give you definitive specs and history for this really outstanding guitar, but I can’t. There is no serial number or any other data to document it; all I have is the previous owner’s story and the point-by-point correspondence with many of the D-18’s characteristics except for the missing Martin logo on top of the Martin-style squared-off headstock. And I can add that the current MSRP for a new Martin Standard Series D-18 is about $2,499.
Here’s the story from the previous owner: “My friend/former guitar teacher got this guitar for me through his contact at the Martin factory in Nazareth, PA six or seven years ago [1999-2000]. It was supposedly built as a test unit/prototype [but] no markings, labels, or stamps were put on it. I do not know any more than that.” Several folks have suggested that this story is contrary to public Martin policy, and I must say that it sounds improbable. I am passing it along for what it's worth.
As for the characteristics, I’m not a great wood person, but this guitar apparently has the D-18’s solid spruce top, and laminated mahogany back, sides, and neck. The 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard has pearl dots, and ends with a plain Martin-style squared-off mahogany headstock with enclosed chrome tuners.
