This marvelous little guitar is playable, and its vintage woods make it sound like a music box. However, it is fragile, has probably had several repairs, and would benefit from being rebuilt by a luthier or someone with a lot of patience. Here is my assessment of the guitar's problems: the action is considerably high and it needs a neck reset, there are several cracks around the sound hole--some running the length of the face of the guitar, and some of the binding and mother of pearl are missing. On the good side, the area around the bridge looks flat, although there is a noticeable indentation above the soundhole, and the bridge is firmly attached. There is little wear on the fretboard (except at the bottom where there is a crack and some sloppy glue). The tuning heads work perfectly. Except for the saddle, everything appears to be original. I would recommend resetting the neck and maybe replacing the missing mother of pearl and binding. I would not replace the top for fear of losing the unique tone.
I do not find a serial number, and the guitar does not have a manufacturer's name on it. I was told by a luthier that it is an early Martin because of the style and the inlaid star.
