Up for bid is a vintage Martin acoustic guitar. I don't know the serial number (it is illegible) so I can't be 100% sure of the year. Here's what I do know:

My aunt gave me this guitar last year after my mother's memorial service. It had belonged to her husband, my uncle (my dad's brother), from the time his father-in-law bought it for him in 1956 (new, she said) until his untimely death in 1966, when I was 13 years old. I had watched him and my dad play and subsequently learned to play myself just the year before his death. After that, I had secretly hoped I would inherit the guitar but it didn't happen. I had heard that another cousin of mine had inherited it instead and, though I was happy for him, I was also disappointed. I never heard anything about the guitar either from my aunt or other family members and I'm not sure where I got the notion that my cousin received it. Nonetheless, my aunt remarried and I lost touch with her. She was present at my dad's funeral in 1977 and I never saw her again after that... not until last year when she came to my mom's memorial service. My sister called me a few weeks later and said our aunt had some things she wanted to give us so we made arrangements to meet at her house the next month. Imagine my shock and surprise when she presented me with several things belonging to my uncle, only one of which was this Martin. She told me the history but not in great detail, only what I've already said in the beginning. She didn't offer a case with it, but I do recall there was one when my uncle was alive. Perhaps it was lost or destroyed, I didn't bother to ask
