This is a beautiful built 5 string Vega / Martin banjo model VW-5 with a lot of history. The Martin Guitar Company bought Vega around 1970. Since Martin Guitars were known for their high quality, the company ascribed the same standards to their new line of banjos which displayed VEGA on the headstock but on the reverse of the headstock was the Martin decal (est. 1883). I do not know how long Martin produced these fine quality banjos but it could not have been for more than a few years. This one has the Martin decal on the 5-ply rim and the serial number 671. Vega banjos are now being made by the Deering Banjo Company but these Martin/Vegas have become collector's items. The mother of pearl inlay in the neck is magnificent. The tuners are Planetary and work fine. There are 24 tension hooks around the pot and a heavy tonering. The flange is comprised of 4 parts. The headstock sports the Vega name and star and two other inlays. It appears to be a mahogany head and neck with an ebony fretboard. The nut measures 1 1/4 inch . There is cream binding on the sides of the neck and around the top and bottom of the resonator. The tailpiece is standard for the model and there is an armrest. There are dual co-ordinator rods in the pot and the neck rod can be adjusted. Where one rod enter the neck. The bridge measures 5/8ths of an inch. It is in close to mint condition I'd say 9 out of 10. I think its the org. head cover (vegaloa). I think this banjo spent 99% of its life in the closet. The banjo comes with the org. plush lined hardshell case that is in good condition. The head measures 11' across. This banjo sounds extra nice, one of the best I ever
