What we have here is a 1969 FENDER CUSTOM. Serial Number 226652. These were made for one year out of leftover parts from the discontinued ELECTRIC XII. They were made in two configurations. The CUSTOM was manufactured for worldwide sale. The MAVERICK was manufactured exclusively for a California department store. The only difference is the headstock decal. Trying to cash in on the trend of wild and wierdly shaped guitars Fender created this...thing. Cuts were made in the body at the top horn strap button and on either side of the bottom strap button. The hole that was routed for the ELECTRIC XII string through bridge was plugged, which can be seen in the pics. Classic two tone Tobacco sunburst. Because of the plug all the backs of these guitars were painted black, no sunburst. It has the same strange four pick-up configuration and four position switch left over from the XII. It also has the standard JAGUAR/MUSTANG tremolo. It also has beautiful mother of pearl block inlays and a bound neck. As the pictures illustrate someone actually played this thing extensively. Much missing paint, especially on the back. Bad buckle rash. Finish on the back of the neck is worn from playing. This guitar has character to spare. There is a small chip in the pickguard near the neck joint. You can even see where the other cuts were almost started on the nut for the XII. There is crazing throughout. Some say, along with the ARROW/MUSICLANDER/SWINGER, that this is the Holy Grail of FENDER guitars. God knows I was caught in it's spell.
