OSCAR SCHMIDT STELLA GUITAR FOR MONTGOMERY WARD OLD
This guitar is no longer for sale (sold on 2007-12-11)
Price : US $255.00
Hi Folks! This is an old parlor guitar, probably 1920's or early 1930's, sold by Montgomery Ward & Co, Kansas City, Missouri -according to the label. The back brace is stamped OAK and I can not see any other markings or labels anywhere. I'm pretty sure this guitar came from the Oscar Schmidt company, best known for their Stella and Sovereign labels, it has the square cut kerfing under the top which is indicative on that factory. The top is spruce with a very nice bevel edging the soundhole. The bridge, which looks to be a replacement, has cracked completely across and will need to be replaced; remarkably, the guitar still plays. The back (and sides?) are nicely figured, bookmatched quartersawn oak. The tuners are old brass ones, probably not original. The neck joint is tight and I suspect it has been reset. Not sure but I think it has been regretted, but the frets are soft and in poor shape. The neck is pretty straight and the intonation is close, it is about a 24 1/2' scale. Nice project for someone to whip into shape. There is no case but I will pack securely. Sold as is, write me if you have questions or want more photos, sold as is, this is a FIVE DAY auction. More interesting items coming up very soon! Thanks for looking and Happy Holidays! On Dec-07-07 at 14:33:37 PST, seller added the following information:
