Introduced
with great fanfare in 1979 and then promptly forgotten, the RD Artist
is experiencing a renaissance. RD’s are showing up in the hands of a
new generation of punk and metal guitarists who want the solid
construction of a Les Paul, Explorer, or Firebird, but want something different from these classic models.
Design-wise,
the RD 79 Artist’s solid maple body is a head-turner: It looks like the
mutant offspring of a Firebird and Explorer. But what really made the
RD 79 Artist radical in its day was its active electronics, which were
designed by none other than legendary synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. The
guitar featured a pair of gold-plated Series VI humbuckers, expansion
and compression circuitry, a mini toggle switch for selecting standard
active or expansion/compression mode, a bright mode switch, a three-way
pickup selector switch, individual bass and treble knobs, and two
volume knobs that double as controls for the amount of compression and
expansion.
Boasting a bound, 24-3/4”-scale ebony fretboard with
mother-of-pearl block position markers, the laminated maple neck
measures 1-11/16” at the nut. With its bound headstock, fancy pearl
headstock
