I have spent the last 25 years in the music store business, and I have decided to move along some of my personal acquisitions (not store stock).
These are instruments that I thought I would never sell, but I am ''thinning out the herd'' and moving along instruments that I don't play, as I believe that quality instruments are made to be played.
This is a wonderful guitar. The serial number stamped on the back of the headstock (and in the label) is 3852XX, which, I believe, makes this one of the last Gibson Acoustics produced in 1966. Of the 4 vintage Hummingbirds I have owned, this one has by far the best tone of them all. It has a warm and rich bass that you can ''feel'' from across a room and very balanced trebles, with the typical Hummingbird midrange. Of course, this is not as loud as my Brazilian Rosewood Martin D-28, so it won't compete with it for flatpicking, but that's okay because that's not what it was built to do---you don't win a horse race with a Clydesdale, and you don't plough a field with a Thoroughbred.
This is an excellent guitar for vocals and mics and it records very well. If you read more about Gibson flattops, you will learn that the Hummingbird is considered by some to be the ultimate rhythm guitar, and especially so for rock & roll. Strum some barre chords and you get that great Gibson rhythm ''chunk'' that sounds halfway between a bluegrass mandolin playing chop chords and a high-hat cymbal.
