I bought this on eBay in March 2010 in a deplorable state: no one had cleaned it thoroughly (or even wiped it off casually) in at least 25 years! It's probably from the early-to-mid 1980s. I restored it to like-new condition. It has a maple fretboard with no special figuring. All its hardware is original except for the tremolo arm (why is it that a Hondo on eBay never seems to have its original tremolo arm?), and possibly the two knobs.

This is a classic Japanese guitar from the days when Japanese companies were just beginning to break into the American market with copies of Fenders and Gibsons, and they felt they had something to prove with the quality of their guitars. All in all this is a great guitar, and I'm happy to add it to my Hondo collection.

Wikipedia says that by the late 1970s, Hondo "featured designs based on classic American favorites; these copies were very good instruments and have become highly collectible."

If you buy a vintage Hondo, it will almost certainly require some basic restoration, mostly cleaning years of neglect off of it, but you’ll never regret it!

I had one almost exactly like this one, except it had two humbuckers in it. Could have been an outside job, IDK, but quality was great on mine. I never really liked the wilkinson style tremolo, too much fidgiting to get it to stay in tune once moved, but overall a great guitar.

I have a neck and a set (2) of the plastic knobs for this guitar if you would like them. The neck is almost identical to this one and is in great shape. Minimal fret ware and it is straight, no issues other than some tiny dings here and there, but minor. Even has the original inspection sticker still on the back. if your interested you can reach me a purplekc1@aol.com Thanks.

Actually the knobs are original....I still have one...they were manufactured in the early 80's and were actually pretty "mean" for a cheap knock off with a bolt on neck...my uncle gave me mine and nobody ever touches it...I am currently working on rebuilding it...that guitar got me through high school and more gigs than I can count....hold on to it.....it's not worth much but it's a work horse
