I bought this off eBay from a private collector in August 2010. Probably manufactured in 1983-84. It has a metallic sky-blue finish with red piping on the front; red headstock; black on the back. Set neck. One DiMarzio humbucker pickup, one volume control only. Fender strat-style tremolo bridge. Original form fitting hard shell case. Hondo also made this model in black with white piping, and in red with no piping; they also made a red one with a bolt-on neck. In addition to the hard shell case, they also made a form-shaped soft shell case for it.

This is a classic Japanese guitar from the days when Japanese companies were just beginning to break into the American market with copies of Fenders and Gibsons, and they felt they had something to prove with the quality of their guitars. This design, however, was original and unique to Hondo. All in all this is a great guitar, and I'm happy to add it to my Hondo collection.

Wikipedia says that by the late 1970s, Hondo "featured designs based on classic American favorites; these copies were very good instruments and have become highly collectible."

If you buy a vintage Hondo, it will almost certainly require some basic restoration, mostly cleaning years of neglect off of it, but you’ll never regret it!

I found one in a flea market for $75.00. It's Metallic Blue... No piping, but looks like a layer of deep red undernieth. It plays like a dream!

Oh, I have a video or two on youtube if you want to see it in action. I hadn't played a guitar in 15 years when I bought the Hondo, and it shows :) Enjoy the vid. http://youtu.be/VLY_hGnIdII

I had one of these, bought brand new, in 1984. Mine was white with Japanese "Rising Sun" artwork. I sold it to a friend a couple of years later for $200. I wish I'd kept it; very unique guitar and played nicely for what was deemed a "cheapo" back then...

I just found one of these at a flea market. Mine is the same sky-blue with red piping. Needs to be cleaned up but appears intact including tuners with the Hondo H logo. How did you find out it was made in 1983-84?
