Silvertone Kay Jumbo Guitar Vintage
U Fix It
Here we have a cool old Silvertone brand jumbo.
It appears to be a Kay product, I’m guessing it is from the early 50’s.
There is a batch number on the inside- L8947 8111, if that means anything to you.
The guitar is 17 5/16th “ at the lower bout. It is a very comfortable 4” deep with a 1 ¾” nut width. The top is solid spruce, the back and sides are laminated mahogany. This guitar has no saddle or tuners. It appears to be crack free. The finish is original and has a nice old beater look to it. To be a playable instrument, this guitar will require a neck set…and while you are at it count on re-fretting it as well. The last four frets have been filed way down, probably to compensate for a hump at the end of the fingerboard. The thing to do would be to plane the fingerboard and re-fret, in my opinion.
All in all, standard old guitar stuff. Should be a straight forward repair for someone that knows what they are doing (or good practice for someone who doesn’t). Something tells me this guitar may be a real ringer for someone with some spare time, a little spare cash…..and a dream...
